President's Message
In last month’s column I noted that on February 8, 2019 Family Medicine celebrated our 50th year as an independent medical specialty.  Since the beginning, Family Medicine has suffered from a sort of identity crisis, or perhaps it is more of a marketing problem.  50 years into our history, we still spend an inordinate amount of time explaining (even to ourselves) who we are, what we do and where we do it.  In his landmark book “The Intellectual Basis of Family Practice”, G. Gayle Stephens, MD notes “Initially, we were trying to define ourselves to others, such as other specialties, other professional societies, the federal government, and medical school deans.  Now, the efforts at definition are largely internally directed.  There are enough of us now to exhibit diversity; we are finding that we are not a homogeneous group.  As in all reforms, there are revisionists among us, of both reactionary and radical persuasions”.  I’m not sure how much has changed in the intervening decades.
