President's Message |
An auspicious date recently came and went without the
fanfare that should probably have accompanied it. February 8, 2019 marks the 50th
year since Family Medicine was officially certified by the American Board of Medical
Specialties (ABMS) as an independent medical specialty. Born in February 1969 out of the embers of
what was thought to be the dying field of General Practice, and against the
wishes of several specialist medical societies, Family Practice (as it was called
until 2005) was founded by radicals. Our
founding fathers (and mothers) set out to not only create a new specialty, but
to change the practice and delivery of medicine in the US.

Even More Bad News for Fluoroquinolones
|
On December 10, 2018,
the FDA issued yet another warning regarding serious side effects associated
with fluoroquinolone use. Cases reported
to the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) and four published observational
studies show evidence consistent with an increased risk for aortic aneurysm
rupture/dissection associated with fluoroquinolone use.

A recent recall of one manufacturer’s ibuprofen oral
suspension drops was recently in the news.
As such drops are usually marketed towards infants, you may get

ADA 2019: What's New?
|
The updated patient centered and evidence based “playbook”
for diabetes care has arrived! The American
Diabetes Association Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes provides all of the
ADA’s current clinical practice recommendations, and is updated annually by the
Professional Practice Committee, a multi-disciplinary team of 12 leading
experts in the field, based on new evidence and practical considerations. It undergoes a formal review process,
including a national committee, ADA mission staff, and the Board of Directors. ADA’s
sole source of clinical practice recommendations, which is updated throughout
the year when warranted by new evidence.
