President's Message |
LISA DODSON, MD
At the time of the founding of the specialty of family
medicine (1969), there was general belief among our founders that family
medicine would be a vehicle for changing the way that American medicine was
practiced and delivered. While many
aspects of family medicine have become quite mainstream, it is apparent that
our specialty is one of a handful that are in any position to fundamentally
contribute to changing the US healthcare system paradigm. Around the world, healthcare systems that
have invested in primary healthcare services and prevention have better patient
outcomes and lower costs than systems that rely more heavily on a
specialty-based system, and it seems clear that without this investment in the
US we will not get a handle on health equity.
