Mark Beamsley, MD
2022 Family Educator of the Year Award Recipient
On behalf of all our members, WAFP congratulates Mark Beamsley, MD for being selected as the Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians 2022 Family Medicine Educator of the Year. The Family Medicine Educator of the Year award recognizes a member who:
Dr. Beamsley completed the Madison residency program of the University of Wisconsin Department of Family Medicine and Community Health (UW DFMCH) twenty years ago and before joining the department’s faculty. While he has served in many roles over the years he now serves as an Associate Professor (Clinician-Teacher track) at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH). His list of accomplishments and teaching accolades include serving as a major course director, teaching and facilitating multiple Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) projects annually, mentorship of 4-6 medical students per year who are committed to interviewing at a Family Medicine residency program, and guidance of DFMCH physicians who teach medical students.
Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Beamsley has led and developed countless Family Physicians. The following are some quotes from residents who worked with him on the inpatient teaching service:
“Great balance between being physically present/teaching while also giving some space for the senior to help the interns manage patients (and I also always felt super comfortable with how easily accessible he was).”
“Helpful and caring. He practiced a great deal of support while allowing me to senior the service.”
“I appreciated how Mark would step back and let us try to figure out assessments/plans without interjecting too quickly because it truly allowed us to learn from our patients. At the same time, he was very much willing to step in when we were stumped and to share his knowledge with us. It's a fine balance that he seems to have down quite well.”
These quotes from those who know his teaching style best, some of his former students exemplify what a worthy recipient Dr. Beamsley is for our Educator of the Year Award. Congratulations Dr. Beamsley! We celebrate your past and look forward to your continued success in leading and developing the next generation of Family Physicians.
