Winter Refresher Course helps physicians break the ice

March 6-8, WAFP reunited with fellow Family Medicine powerhouse MCW to bring the 54th Annual Winter Refresher Course (WRC) to life. The greatest family medicine minds from across the state congregated at the elegant Ingleside Hotel and Waterpark to trade knowledge and build relationships.

Over 100 WAFP members were in attendance, representing the Academy by participating in riveting presentations. Many others left interested in learning more about WAFP. The WRC also facilitated continuing medical education (CME) opportunities. The AAFP approved the conference for credit, with the Pain Medicine KSA session offering 8 live AAFP Prescribed credits and the WRC itself providing 16.5 live AAFP Prescribed credits.

WRC offered a comprehensive review of evidence-based practices for diagnosing and managing acute and chronic medical conditions commonly encountered in primary care settings. Attendees also had the opportunity to discuss social and environmental factors affecting health outcomes and were able to network with their peers. Attendees learned the application of evidence-based updates in primary care, discussed enhancements on primary care practices and policies, and mastered common office-based procedures.

The conference was book-ended by two WAFP-sponsored events: the pre-conference Pain Medicine KSA and the post-conference Opioid Prescribing Education workshop. Other highlights included workshops on basic suturing and point-of-care ultrasound, alongside a preceptor appreciation luncheon and a research poster and networking reception.

The conference culminated in a fruitful Annual Business Meeting for WAFP. After a decade of going virtual, the Meeting returned to an in-person format March 8. AAFP President Steve Furr MD, FAAFP was on hand to induct the new slate of WAFP Board Members, including newly appointed WAFP President Beth Menzel. Dr. Menzel gave a captivating and inspirational speech about the future of our Academy and how every member is crucial in helping us evolve, while challenging members to get involved in OUR Academy.

Thank you for all those who attended this year’s WRC. And for anyone else interested, make sure to mark your calendars for the Winter Refresher Course 2025 March 6 & 7!
