With measles cases continuing to spread at high levels nationally, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services has released updated guidance for clinicians, infection preventionists, clinical laboratories, and local health departments. Since January 1, 2025, Wisconsin has reported 38 measles cases, and additional travel-related cases remain possible in the months ahead.
DHS strongly recommends that all measles testing, including both PCR and serologic testing for symptomatic patients, be sent to the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene for fee-exempt testing. This change is intended to reduce financial barriers, speed up diagnosis, and improve coordination with public health investigations.
The memo outlines three critical steps for providers when measles is suspected: isolate the patient under airborne precautions, test using the appropriate specimen collection process, and report the case immediately by phone to the local health department. Measles remains a Category I Reportable Disease in Wisconsin.
