Name:  Robert Sander, M.D.

Location:  Stevens Point, WI

Type of Practice: Rural, Multi-SpecGroup
Scope of Practice: Newborns
Particular clinical interests: The family practice group of which I am a member was intending to precept the extern as a group although I planned to take the lead and insure a well coordinated experience. This would allow exposure to our variety of practice styles. The group consists of two women and two men including myself. All of us have been in practice for at least 7 years. Our group practices the full spectrum of outpatient family medicine except for obstetrics. This includes colposcopy, vasectomy, stress ECG, and minor surgery. We care for our pediatric inpatients including newborns, but use hospitalists to care for our adult inpatients. Our group also includes a nurse practitioner and a physician assistant so the extern could gain exposure to the role of other advanced care practitioners.
Patient panel characteristics: Our practice covers all ages and backgrounds. This ranges from farmers to blue collar workers to university professors and college students. We have many patients from the community nursing homes and assisted living who are still ambulatory enough to come to our office.
Personal information and interests: I am the newest member of our group but have been in family medicine for 30 years ranging from solo to group practice as well as 13 years as a faculty member at the Waukesha Family Practice Residency. At the residency I worked with medical students throughout their 4 years of training, and I am looking forward to the opportunity to continue this role. Although currently only practicing outpatient family medicine, I was practicing the full range of family medicine including obstetrics until 1 years ago and could bring in discussions of these additional elements of family medicine in the course of precepting. Outside of medicine I enjoy sailing, hiking, biking, kayaking, and photography among many other interests. As described above the other members of my group have had many years of
experience in family medicine with a wide range of interests and skills in outpatient family medicine.
What’s fun to do in the area? Stevens Point is a very active place in the summer. Every week has at least a couple of community events ranging from weekly band concerts in the park by the Wisconsin River to festivals focusing on such things as energy efficiency, old cars, and local cultural traditions. The University of Wisconsin in Stevens Point remains active with many students still on campus. There are a multitude of outside activities with many rivers, lakes, and trails in the area as well as the many parks in and surrounding Stevens Point.
What are the housing arrangements? Housing is available nearby through our affiliate hospital, St. Michael.
What would the student do? I would propose having the student initially shadow the providers, including the PA and NP, to get a sense of the content and style of family medicine. We would then have the student start to take histories from the patients independently. The student would also start to engage in more and more of the physical exam. As the student had more and more experience, he or she could start to develop a differential diagnosis prior to examination by the preceptor. I would also like to discuss the use of diagnostic aids such as references on PDA?s and the internet. In addition, I always like to weave in discussions of how family medicine fits into the overall field of medicine and the future of medicine. Finally, since our practice is part of a multi-specialty group, if the student wanted to gain experience in obstetrics, inpatient medicine, and emergency medicine this could be arranged.
This would be a great externship for a student because: We bring a lot of enthusiasm to our practice of family medicine, and I feel we can share that with a student. Although our practice is limited primarily to outpatient medicine, I feel the diversity of what we do is still broad enough to provide a good overview of family medicine without overwhelming the student with too many experiences. Finally, Stevens Point is a great place to spend a summer.
Anything else the student should know? Just that we would really enjoy introducing the student to family medicine and its many possibilities for a lifetime of service and intellectual stimulation.
